When you hear the word “hero” you think of somebody that...

When you hear the word â€Å"hero† you think of somebody that is brave, courageous, and determined. They seem to always support a cause and wanting to make a difference. In the novel, A Farewell to Arms by Ernest Hemingway there is one individual who stands out as the â€Å"Hemingway Hero.† It is called a Hemingway Hero because of the way Hemingway writes. The characteristics of the â€Å"Hemingway Hero† are brave man of action, knowledge, stoical, and a strong survivor. In this book those qualities belong to a man named Frederic Henry. Henry is an ambulance driver for the Italian army during the war. Henry is a man who is very brave and courageous, but just missing a little aspect of life. In the beginning of the novel, Henry meets a young lady named†¦show more content†¦He becomes very occupied and strict in his duties. Before a battle occurred, Henry made sure everything was safe and that no matter what happened his army of ambulances would know what to do. Halfway through the war, Henry gets severely injured but so does one of his good friends. Instead of worrying about himself in this situation, he goes straight to his companion and treats him and merely saves his life. He doesn’t show any disease or pain and he fights throughout the war without showing and fear and shows how brave and courageous he truly is. After this, Henry wants to leave the war because he truly just doesnt see the point any longer. One characteristic that shows he is a hero is that despite how cruel the war was to him and to everybody, he still finds happiness. He is overjoyed with Catherine because she gives him hope and meaning to live and without her he would be an outcast. We had a lovely time that summer...I remember the carriage...Catherine Barkley sitting beside me. If we let our hands touch...we were excited. (112) He is happier than ever! She changed his life and he couldn’t be any more glad. In the beginning of the novel, I would never expect him to act like this. He has changed and it is for the better. The final obstacle that is the turning point of the novel is when Catherine is giving birth to their baby. It seems as if Henry doesn’t even care about her or the baby at this point.
